Get the current mapping of a gamepad.

const char * SDL_GetGamepadMapping(SDL_Gamepad *gamepad);

Function Parameters

SDL_Gamepad * gamepad the gamepad you want to get the current mapping for.

Return Value

(const char *) Returns a string that has the gamepad's mapping or NULL if no mapping is available; call SDL_GetError() for more information.


This returns temporary memory which will be automatically freed later, and can be claimed with SDL_ClaimTemporaryMemory().

Details about mappings are discussed with SDL_AddGamepadMapping().


This function is available since SDL 3.0.0.
